Happiness Is Not for Me

Oh, sure, there are times of joy. But there's a lot of hard work and anguish in maintaining sobriety, too

IF THERE is anything in AA that tests my tolerance, it is the guy or gal who says, "I am a happy alcoholic!" Now, I am glad that I am an alcoholic, for the simple reason that being an alcoholic provides some kind of explanation for my insane behavior during the drinking days. Nearly eighteen years of continuous sobriety, however, have convinced me that managing to live without wanting to drink calls for too much effort most of the time to provide total happiness. Mind you, I haven't thought about drinking in years. My concern is with being on guard against the kind of thinking which, for me, ultimately leads to drinking.
