South African Drink Problems

It is a measure of the Coloreds' disillusionment that they have attained a truly heroic rate of alcoholism. In South Africa, the rate for Africans is four confirmed alcoholics per thousand and for Europeans five per thousand. For Coloreds, it is 35 per thousand. Living, as most of them do, near the coast, they have become expert fishermen, but so many of them have been undone by drink that African fishermen from other areas have had to be brought in to work the boats.
