Opinion on Cough Drugs

Coughs. . .usually are self-limited, of brief duration, and do not require an arsenal of drugs for relief. The typical pharyngeal tickling irritation can often be relieved by a candy drop without resort to drugs. Even for more serious or severe coughing, there is no justification for using four or more drugs simultaneously, some having opposing effects on the cough reflex. . . . Another objection to multiple drug mixtures is the increased risk of interactions between drugs (including alcohol) in the mixtures with other drugs simultaneously prescribed. . . .
