Youth Stays Loyal to the Oldest Mood-Changer

Young people now talk to us about marijuana, pointing out that the older generation's drug is alcohol. There is little chance of explaining alcohol use to young people when there are such wide gaps in our own understanding, our attitudes, our actions; when we tell them that alcoholics are sick people, but we put them in jail; when we tell a young person that his mother is drinking too much, but we don't bring her for treatment--it would be too embarrassing; when we know that excessive drinkers are involved in 50% of highway fatalities, but we have made no major effort to do anything about it; when many physicians will not utter the diagnosis "alcoholism"--chronic gastritis, or almost anything else, is substituted. . . .
