We have to learn to forgive ourselves if we are to be useful to ourselves and others - Essence of AA

I AM AN ALCOHOLIC, but that doesn't describe my whole being, by any means. I am also many other things. I am a good person, I love my fellowmen. I have dedicated my life to a helping profession for the service of mankind, and I was doing this even as an active alcoholic. (Needless to say, I can do a much more effective job as an arrested alcoholic, but the desire to be of service was always there.) I am creative and industrious, and I get along well with others. My work is respected by my colleagues.
