POSTSCRIPT: The following night wasn't much better. We stayed in town for a meeting and then--to avoid a further confrontation with the railroad--stayed in a hotel. No sooner had we snuggled down in our little bide-a-wee for the night when the telephone rang. The heating system at home had picked this particular winter night to pack up.
