Hair-shirt Humility

Need we be as compulsive about guilt as we were about booze?

MEMBERS OF AA have interesting reactions to the word "humble." Apparently, it is even more loaded than the alcoholic was in his drinking days. Newcomers, and some not so new, become infuriated at the notion that they should do anything humbly; others smile smug and would-be humble smiles and chortle, "You'll learn, you'll learn," which does little to improve the temper of the meeting.
