Carrying the Message

On losing a sponsor

This afternoon, my sponsor called to say that she felt she had done all she could for me--that I had better look around the program for someone who could help me more. I was casual and friendly, but it hurt deeply. This was just another example, I thought, of how I had failed in life (poor little old me) at the age of thirty-one--the lost jobs, the friends easing away, a loving but distant husband. (An AA doctor some time ago bluntly told me that any husband would dry up after eight years of hearing his wife talk about herself all the time.)
