By broadening health insurance to include alcoholism, firms find they can insist that drinkers accept care. "The fact that a worker may lose his job usually motivates him into treatment," says General Motors' medical director. A major California oil company requires alcoholics to take its 21-day treatment or be fired; it figures the aid has saved $650,000 in lost work time, and been effective in eight out of 10 cases.
