Carrying the Message

Old-timer's dilemma

I ditched a meeting tonight and worked on a piece for the Grapevine instead. I think I got as much AA out of this as I would have by going to the meeting. I don't know what has happened to our group in latter years, but I don't get what I want and need from our meetings. We have grown considerably, and the majority now are quite young people, and they just don't seem to me to be very dedicated to the Fellowship. Years ago, when we were much smaller, we used to discuss Steps, Steps, Steps, and how to stay sober happily. Now, a good deal of the time, we talk about things almost as far-out as how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. Last week, we had two new people--their first meeting--and most of the time was spent in a harangue about group finances. The rest of the time, it was on a few of the less vital Traditions.
