Reaching Out for New Horizons

ONE TIME in 1953, I had a long talk with our co-founder Bill W. about the special problems of old-timers--the lapse into drinking or dry despair that sometimes overtook the careless and unwary, and the generally uphill road of life's later years, with its invariable prognosis of progressive aging into more and more advanced old age and, finally, death. Bill wound up the conversation by saying, "We've got to do something more for these older guys and gals."
