SPEAKING OF JAIL, we have it on impeachable authority that a sometime contributor of ours--the man who lives at One Slip Road--got some mild official criticism after he'd given his AA talk at the group in New Hampshire State Prison. The warden took him aside and said most earnestly, "The governor and I would both appreciate it immensely if, in future talks here, you would try to refrain from describing alcoholism as 'an escape.' Some of the undergraduates at Ol' New Hampshire State don't see escape as all that bad."
