Once Over Lightly

Sense and nonsense on the road to recovery

NEWS OF THE NATION'S HIGHWAYS: Strange things have been going on out on the interstates, most of them the direct product of too much internal antifreeze. For instance, although it is usually considered to be the driver who is in danger when he picks up a hitchhiker, consider the poor hippy who, pack on his back, long hair a-blowin', and guitar at the ready, climbed aboard a car out west--only to discover that his benefactor was already carrying a full load (of booze). They weaved all over the road, but the hippy remained wordless until they began to approach a narrow bridge. He could stay silent no longer and asked, "Do you think you can get across?"
