When self-forgetfulness occurs, "the spirit" takes over

WHEN I CAME into Alcoholics Anonymous, "spirit" and "spiritual" were like words in a foreign language to me. There were good reasons behind my lack of comprehension. I was brought up in a fundamentalist church whose doctrines, especially as interpreted by my father, made "soul" almost a dirty word. Any reference to an "immortal soul" was enough to make Pa snort with derision. The fleshly body was All, and when it died, one was Dead--completely. This same body, however, was to be resurrected intact, though purified and perfected, at the Second Coming of Christ.
