Alcoholism and the Fetus

Doctors in Seattle have identified a pattern of serious birth defects among children born to women who are chronic alcoholics. The syndrome, described in a recent issue of the journal Lancet, involves an overall growth deficiency, lagging intellectual and motor development, small head size, heart defects, and subtle facial and limb abnormalities.
