Learning to live soberly in AA is like learning how to swim. When you've never been able to swim, you get scared of going near the water. In AA, the water represents living. For a while when you're first learning to swim, you need a lifeguard/instructor to teach you. My instructors were the AA group members. After a lot of time and practice, I learned the simple strokes needed to stay afloat. After the Twelve Steps, I became more sophisticated and enjoyed life/water and living/swimming. Sometimes now, I'm the lifeguard.
