Is Speaking a Must?

Ed G. came to his first AA meeting about four months ago and for the first ninety days made ninety-five meetings and was happy without a drink. He did nothing but listen, except to give his name, mention his illness, and pass. He made a special effort to go where a special speaker was present and also to attend Big Book and Twelve Steps discussion meetings. He always arrived early and left late and made many friends. He was anxious to give his phone number to anyone who didn't have a car, and he would explain to all of these people that he went every night and would be glad to have them come with him. He was a withdrawn person, but seemed to be making progress.
