Although an increasing number of women drink alcohol, a traditional double standard toward male and female drunkenness is still strong, Edith S. Gomberg, professor of social work at the University of Michigan, said. Mrs. Gomberg, a clinical psychologist, said most persons view male drunkenness with pity or amusement, but view the same behavior in women as disgusting.
