Silent AAs speak up

I identify so much with Ed G. I., too, am quiet and do not mingle too well, but I do make friends and am able to talk to the people near me. I am a member of AA for over a year. I remember so well going to closed meetings with my sponsor and absolutely dreading it. After three months, I felt that everyone was waiting for me to say something. When it came to my turn, my hands perspired, my mind went blank, and all I could say was "I pass." I did not celebrate my first anniversary, because I truly felt I couldn't speak, even though I wanted to. It was becoming an obsession with me. My sponsor, in her wisdom, told me, "Don't worry about it. Don't pick up that first drink and keep coming to meetings."
