IN SEPTEMBER of 1967, I acquired a German shepherd dog. It was during my last and worst two years of drinking that the poor puppy was brought up. So, during his first two years, the most formative of a shepherd's life, he suffered with me from my disease. Then came a long hospitalization. In November 1969, when I was released, my shepherd greeted me with joy, expecting more of the usual episodes attendant on drunkenness.
