Keeping Yourself Out of Debt
AMONG MILLIONS of things I had to worry about when I first came into AA were debts. Nothing original about that--most of the AAs I knew had money troubles. Large quantities of booze are expensive, yet income-producing work and imbibing are naturally incompatible. Work is the curse of the drinking classes, as the old saying goes. Then there is the big-shot complex, which causes alcoholics to buy drinks for the whole party, and then go home and stop delivery of the morning paper to save money. (Over a month's time, this bit of self-denial will save the price of approximately four drinks.)
