A report published in the State of Victoria by the Victorian Foundation on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence said that alcohol was the drug most abused, and it estimated that Australia had 300,000 alcoholics. Some 14% of beds in public hospitals are occupied by people with illnesses and problems associated with alcoholism.
