Alcoholics Anonymous and Physicians

Writing in an important medical journal, this AA doctor tells his story for the benefit of his medical colleagues--and all of us

IT ISN'T EASY for anyone to say, "I'm an alcoholic," and it's doubly difficult for a physician to admit that he's afflicted with a disease he doesn't understand and can't even define with precision. But "My name is Jim, and I'm an alcoholic" is my first sentence each time I speak during a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous, in which I've been active for twenty-six years.
