A wise coward

I'm English and have been living in Brazil for the last twenty years--or, let me say, living for the last nine years, having existed during eleven years which passed without my noticing. I left England to get away from all those friends who insisted I was necessary for the local darts team; from my boss, who didn't understand that I had to leave early at times to visit other pubs, and get in the next day late, because I hadn't slept too well; and from my father and mother, who thought their son was a disgrace. I couldn't get away from my wife and two kids, so I brought them to Brazil, because I was sure things would be different. They were. Three years later, she left me and took the kids back to England.
