AS ANOTHER fall slowly decayed into winter, I found myself slipping into hopelessness once more. By this thirtieth winter of my life, I realized that I was addicted to alcohol and amphetamines, caught in an upper-downer, roller-coaster syndrome, and I did not know how to get off.
