You can probably blame it on the prolonged United Parcel Service strike. With UPS out of action, the stores that had relied on that service for their deliveries turned to the U.S. mail instead. Before long, post offices looked as if the Christmas rush was starting way ahead of schedule, with packages of merchandise rising in stacks around the harried clerks.
