Put-downs can be uplifting

A little over two years ago, when I first came into AA, I was like a lot of new members--I thought a guy with two years of sobriety over me was actually singling me out to belittle, take issue, and argue with, and pick to pieces anything or everything (depending on the point in question or under discussion) that I said or did. At times, I swore I would never go to a meeting if I knew ahead of time that he would be there. But in spite of myself, I found myself going to the very meetings I knew he would attend. Before I could stop myself (guess I do talk a lot!), I would either direct a question right at him or aim it in his general direction. Oh, how I hated that hard-nosed, know-it-all smart aleck.
