Trials of a Group Secretary

. . .and some have greatness thrust upon them.

IT WAS NOT long after I returned to AA for the umpteenth time that I was asked to be secretary of a group. It blew my mind. To think that my great administrative ability should be recognized! But inexplicably, instead of following my usual headstrong impulse and accepting, I asked the opinion of a man who had six or seven months on me this time around. He advised me against it. To my utter amazement, I took his advice, and immediately began to pay close attention to what the secretary did.
