SOME YEARS ago at a participation meeting, I heard a young man hold forth on "not going for this 'Get rid of your ego' stuff." He was deliberately trying to build up his ego, develop more self-awareness, express himself, cultivate his own me-ness. I disagreed with and was made uneasy by this line of thinking. As I recollect, however, I felt it prudent not to take issue with the young man. We have many meetings in the area I live in, and I almost never visit the one where this heresy--as I considered it--was expressed.
