Getting It All Back

A writer on a lost weekend is twelfth-stepped by his agent

TWO AND A HALF years ago, or a little more, I was into the heaviest part of my drinking. My literary agent then, a wonderful man, decided to drop me because I wasn't producing. Only instead of dropping me, he turned me over to (what I thought was) a young upstart. (Actually, he isn't young, or any kind of upstart.) So I went on a three-day binge that involved driving from Denver down to Taos, somehow avoiding accidents, and then drove back, drunk and angry--getting dropped that way, shuffled over to another agent like so many potatoes!
