A consequence of the reported increase in drinking among young people may be a significant statistical increase in the rate of alcohol problems within the next few years, according to University of California Professor Don Cahalan.
He suggested that for teenagers problems with alcohol manifest themselves as social events (such as accidents and encounters with the law) rather than as physical conditions (such as cirrhosis). In light of this, he urged that more attention be paid to the specific drinking problem or disruptive behavior rather than to predictors of alcoholism or medical symptoms in working with young people.
