THE MEN IN THIS STORY were traveling west by auto, on the northern route to the state of Washington. One morning, after a night of elbow-bending at the hotel bar, they got off on the wrong road. After endless miles of driving over lonely prairie land, they came to the outskirts of a town and stopped the first pedestrian they saw. "What's the name of this place?" they asked him.
