Half of the North American policemen killed while on duty are probably slain while investigating family disputes, a Canadian police officer estimates. Detective Sergeant Robert Weatherstone of London, Ont., said he cannot remember responding to a family dispute that did not involve alcohol. Police fear family-dispute investigations more than any other type of call.

"Booze and family problems are the worst things you can get involved in. Every call scares you because you don't know what you're walking into. You can walk up to the door and--boom!"

Such calls occupy about half the time of a man on the beat in his city.
