A round-the-clock information, counseling, and referral program offers "self-service" help to alcoholic persons among other troubled employees of three large companies in the Philadelphia area.

Info Now is a demonstration project testing the efficacy of self-referrals by troubled employees, as opposed to the more traditional identification and referral by supervisors or company medical staff.

The program, developed by the National Council on Alcoholism in Philadelphia, contracts with companies to provide counseling and referral services to employees on a confidential basis. Each company informs its employees and their families of the service by using brochures, posters, and existing company communications tools such as newsletters.

Info Now services were offered to more than 12,000 employees. In the first year, the agency was contacted by 418 people, 350 of them self-referrals.
