A group of recovering alcoholic men in Bangor, Me., use the sport of basketball to spread the message that alcoholism is a treatable illness, and at the same time to publicize local alcoholism treatment facilities.
The men, who constitute a team called the Recovering Alkies, played 18 games during their first season, mostly before junior high school students. Prior to the games, a film on alcoholism was shown, and each member of the team, wearing a uniform listing the name of a local alcoholism treatment program, introduced himself. Opposing teams have included school faculties, prisoners of the Maine state prisons, Jaycees, and employees and patients of alcoholism treatment units in the area.
