MY GRANDDAD was a puritan pioneer. He helped settle the West. At Cripple Creek, during a labor dispute, he was enlisted by the state militia to settle those troublesome miners who, for reasons the governor was unable to understand, were unhappy about working sixteen hours a day. Granddad was a competitor.
