Once Over Lightly

Sense and nonsense on the road to recovery

FROM D. W., WE'VE RECEIVED a tale about a chap who had just come off a bad bender. To help him get through his first sober evening at home, his wife invited a neighboring couple, who knew of the drinking problem, to come over for a game of bridge. But the poor dipso was a nervous wreck. He couldn't keep track of the cards, made error upon error, and caused his wife progressively more irritation. Finally, he could stand it no longer and headed for the kitchen. Soon after, there was the sound of the shaky chattering of a bottle neck on the rim of a glass.
