As one who has never spent a minute inside the "slammer," I often wondered just where it gained its name. The first trip inside removed all questions when I heard the doors close and secure behind me as I walked to the meeting room. It is an eerie feeling and you never quite get used to it, even though you realize that in a few minutes you'll be able to walk out again.
