Freedom Through Acceptance

But when. . .we could gladly make right choices. . .then we had our first view of what perfect freedom under God's will could be like.

THERE IS much talk in our AA literature about dependence and independence. Basically, we are told that dependence on a Higher Power is the right kind. To me, the First Step--surrendering the right to drink and admitting the unmanageability of life--is my acceptance of the need to be dependent on something or someone other than myself. The key virtue required to take this Step is humility. We were often humiliated in our drunkenness, and it did little good. Now that we humble ourselves to a Higher Power and the advice of AA, humility works wonders.
