God Is My Friend

GOD AS I used to understand Him expected me (I thought) to keep a super-clean house and never to steal or lie or commit adultery. I thought He would punish me if I did not live up to His expectations. I kept a clean house and didn't steal or lie or commit adultery, yet I began a course of self-destruction, always praying, always trying to be good, still unknowingly attempting suicide on the installment plan, better known as alcoholism.
