MIKE AND HIS family lived in a run-down section of Detroit. He was drinking heavily and was in and out of work, so his wife, Bridget, was constantly applying for welfare aid whenever they had no food or clothes for the four children. Just about the time she managed to get the welfare, he would sober up, come home with his first paycheck, and scream that no family of his would accept welfare.
