Once Over Lightly

Sense and nonsense on the road to recovery

JANET M. OF NEW YORK tells of a priest who was driving through a rural area when his car suddenly conked out. Knowing nothing of mechanics, he was sitting there helplessly when a horse in a field near the road said, "Let the motor cool, pump the accelerator three times, and turn on the starter." The priest did so; the motor came to life; and he drove on down the road to a tavern owned by one of his parishioners, where he stopped to have a dram for his nerves while telling about the strange occurrence.
