We who died and now live

In AA, I've experienced the shock of recognition again and again in the story of a fellow alcoholic. His agony has been my agony. The details vary, but the story is the same. Sitting at the Step One table, I have heard my own death wish repeated in different words, but always with the same soul-racking despair. We AAs have all been a little more than "half in love with easeful death," for when life is torture, death is relief.
