THE QUESTION caught me off guard: "What's it feel like to be an alcoholic minister, George?" I thought of the day I realized my drinking was out of control and the sheer terror that swallowed me up. I had committed the unforgivable sin; I was a leper, untouchable; my job would be ruined; my friends would hate me; my wife would feel nothing but contempt for me. It was a time-stopping, earthshaking, heart-wrenching, stomach-turning moment.
