Surrender to the Unknown
THE PHILOSOPHY of surrender was contrary to everything I had been taught in life. From the beginning, the name of the game was to play fair, but win. This ideal of accomplishment was held out to me like the carrot to the donkey. Get high grades in school. Play a fair game in all sports, but win. In the theater, strive for the best parts; outwit one's best friends to get them. In business, be smarter than the competition; plan ahead so that one never got caught off balance. The onus was always on me to strive for that far-off goal. It took time and wisdom for me to recognize that getting there, in most of life, was all the fun. Once achieved, a goal could become a very empty thing.
