WHEN THOSE TWO GENTS MET that night, they probably were as bewildered as the World War II Army doctor on a South Pacific island. Young and inexperienced, he was confronted with an illness he didn't know how to treat, so he sent a message to headquarters: "What should I do with a case of beriberi?"
