AA promised me sobriety if I didn't take the first drink. AA promised me a better life and perhaps some fringe benefits if I tried living the AA way by turning my life and will over to God. I'm such a hardheaded person and so full of self-will that it took me while to stop playing with the Third Step like a yo-yo. In fact, there are still times when I take it back. AA also told me to start being good to myself, so the day came when I was capable of accepting some good things, some of the fringe benefits.
