Four-letter Words

When I came to AA, I was ready and willing to try anything. You gave me a bundle of four-letter words. I made a determined jump into AA; you told me to walk. I was full of fear; you gave me hope. I was torn with bitterness, hostility, and self-hatred; you taught me to love. I made lists of my wants; you helped me understand what I need. I wanted to "get the program" right away; you taught me to begin with the First Step. I was in a race to prove my worth; you showed me how to live at an even pace. I wanted to know what lay ahead; you said, "Better things, in time." I cried to you for help; you told me, "God answers if you pray." And now when I wonder when, I know I'll know if I wait.
