OVER AND OVER when I started in AA, I heard, "Don't take a drink and go to a meeting." "For pete's sake, I know that!" I would say. Yet months went by before I could grasp the simple meaning of the often-repeated words. I was not honest with myself or others; I pretended to know a lot more about what was being said than I did.
