On dual addiction

I came to AA with a dual addiction and was set free of alcohol in 1973, but I chose to remain addicted to pills. I was convinced I couldn't cope with life unless I had some chemical to insure my peace of mind and to manage my life for me. All during five years in AA, pills were doing for me what I was convinced I couldn't do for myself and what this Higher Power everyone called God surely couldn't do. I was afraid to give Him a try. When I heard others speak of their addiction and how a Power greater than themselves had set them free, I turned them off. I needed those pills!
